ms-misguided asked: Hello Jay! I feel blessed finding your site. Your work is amazing and inspiring! As a Ceramics student myself, I was wondering: what kind of 'soft clay' do you use? I personally love Firethorn and Bisbod / Dover, which are more groggy than I'm sure you prefer. Keep up the inspirational work!
Hi- I’m happy to hear you enjoy my work!
Right now I use Laguna Redstone stoneware, fired in an electric kiln to cone 5. I soften it before use by slicing it into 1/4” slices and adding slurry or water, then aging overnight.
Some of my older pieces are made with Highwater Red Rock stoneware (these are the ones with speckles), but this clay tends to burn darker than I like at the upper end of the cone 5 range. The white pieces are made with either Highwater Little Loafers or Miller 50 porcelain.
Never tried Firethorn or Bisbod/Dover, but I actually lurve me some groggy clay!
Cheers!
Jay
